Milagu Vadai | Pepper Vadai

Milagu Vadai is made and offered to Lord Hanuman on the auspicious day of Hanuman Jayanti. The word "Milagu" in Tamil means 'Peppercorns'. It's easy to make and follows the same procedure as it's more famous contemporary Medhu Vadai. Grind the batter thick without water. Pat them into flat discs and fry them until crisp.

Ingredients:

Preparing Time: 1-2 hours | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Makes 12-15 Vadas 

1 cup Urad Dal
1 tsp Rice Flour 
1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Peppercorns
Salt to taste


Method:



  • Soak urad dal at least for an hour.
  • Drain it well with rice flour.
  • Grind it into a coarse batter without adding water. (If unable to grind then add a few drops of water)


  • Add peppercorns and salt to the batter.
  • Blend it well.
  • Take a polytene sheet and grease with ghee.
  • Wet yours hands and take a portion of batter and place it on the polytene sheet .
  • Now flatten it into a thin disc.
  • Make a hole in the middle with your finger.
  • Lift the polytene sheet and flip it onto your hands. (Make sure your hands are wet, so it's easy to drop the vadas in the oil)
  • Again make a hole in the middle with your thumb and upturn your hand drop the vada in the oil slowly.


  • Fry on the medium flame.
  • Turn the vadas and fry till both the sides turn crisp and golden brown.
