How To Make Chapatis Or Indian Flat Bread

Chapati is an unleavened flat bread also known as roti. They are perfect for any occasion. The aroma and unforgettable taste of the homemade chapatis are made from scratch. Chapati sizes (diameter and thickness) varies from region to region and kitchen to kitchen. In Gujarat chapati is called rotli and can be as thin as tissue paper. Chapatis can be served with any Indian curry, or even used to make sandwich rolls. Chapatis are not difficult to make, but the old saying, "Practice Makes Perfect" is a perfect example to it. So lets start making them.
Ingredients: (Makes 10 Chapatis)
| Whole wheat flour | 2 cups |
| Water | As per your preference |
| Salt | To taste |
| Oil | 2 Tbsp |
Method:
Take 2 cups of whole wheat flour in a bowl and add salt to taste.
Go slow with water, add it as you go along and only as needed. Knead to form smooth, medium soft dough.
Add the oil. Keep kneading till you get a smooth dough. Divide dough into balls.
Lightly coat one ball in dry flour. Flatten the ball of dough.
Roll with circular motions. Coat circle with dry flour. Finish rolling the chapati. Start cooking the chapati. Now its ready for first flip.
After the second flip, press gently. And then apply ghee to it and serve hot.
Tips:
- Using yogurt or milk will give you super soft chapatis
- The dough must be smooth and just the right softness. Add water as equired and continue to knead it, until you get the right consistency.
- Dough balls must me smooth and without cracks.
