Rava Upma / Breakfast Recipes
Saturday, June 29, 2013
Upma is a traditional South Indian dish made of semolina (rava or sooji). It is the most common breakfast dish in South Indian homes. Mom makes upma for breakfast and also sometimes for dinner, we love to have it hot with coconut chutney or pickle. It's also made for the evening with hot masala chai or coffee. This a very basic recipe that anyone can cook, especially for the beginners who are learning to cook. So lets get started.
Ingredients:
Ingredients:
| Rava/semolina | 1 cup |
| Water | 2.5 cups |
| Onion | 1 |
| Green chili's | 4 to 5 |
| Salt | To taste |
To Temper:
| Oil | 2 Tbsp |
| Mustard | 1/2 tsp |
| Cumin seeds | 1/2 tsp |
| Urad dal | 1/2 tsp |
| Channa dal | 1 Tbsp |
Method:
Heat the pan and dry roast the rava until the roasted smell of rava wafts and set aside. Now add oil in the same pan and add temper with all the ingredients mentioned above.
Now add green chili, onions and cook until the onions are translucent. Then add water and salt to it, bring it to boil.
Add the roasted rava slowly little by little and keep stirring at the same time ( so no lumps are formed).
Mix well until it becomes thick and the water gets absorbed.
Cook covered on low heat for 5 minutes. Make sure to mix in between once. After its done garnish it with ghee and serve hot.
