Tea is one of the famous drinks all over India, and Masala Chai is made with a mixture of aromatic Indian Spices and herbs. Many people have a misconception that Chai itself is made with cardamon, ginger and other common spices. However, Chai is simply the Hindi word for Tea and can be prepared black. At my place mom prepares Chai or Tea in the evenings, but most of the people have it with their morning breakfast. The simplest way of preparing chai is through decoction, by continuously boiling the water and milk with tea powder (loose leaf tea), sugar and whole spices. Indian markets also sell various chai or tea masalas through out the world.
I make masala tea almost everyday in the mornings and Ginger Cardamon Tea in the evenings. The spices and the herbs in the masala chai are really healthy and refreshing. I blend my own chai masala as most of the households. The method of chai varies by taste or local custom. Some households may combine all the ingredients together at the start, bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately strain and serve. But I love having Kadak Chai (Strong Chai/tea), so we don't add much milk to the chai. So, lets get started.
Ingredients:
Chai: (Serves 2)
| Water | 1 & 1/2 cup |
| Milk | 1/2 cup |
| Tea/Chai powder | 2 tsp |
| Sugar | To taste |
| Fresh ginger grated | 1 tsp |
| Chai masala | 1/2 tsp |
Method:
Boil water in sauce pan and add freshly grated ginger to it. Let it boil for a minute. Then add the tea powder and the chai masala and boil it for 2 minutes ( It depends on how kadak u want the chai). The more you boil the tea powder the more kadak tea it would be.
Add milk and sugar to it. As the chai comes to boil, turn off the heat and transfer it to the tea pot or into the tea cups.
You can serve it with any snack item or with breakfast.
