Dal is also called "Pappu" in telugu language. Dal is the staple food in Indian Homes and there are many variations of making it, which vary from state to state as well and home to home.
This Dal has a tang and the flavors of the tomatoes. This comforting dal is best had with steamed rice and some ghee.
Ingredients:
1 cup Toor dal / Pigeon Peas
3 Tomatoes (roughly chopped)
1 tsp Mustard Seeds
1 tsp Cumin Seeds
1-1/2 tsp Urad Dal / Black Gram
3-4 Cloves Of Garlic
1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
1-1/2 tsp Red Chili Powder
1/8 tsp Asafetida
2 tblsp Oil
Few Curry Leaves
Salt To Taste
Method:
- Take toor dal (Pigeon Peas) into a bowl and wash them thoroughly.
- Wash, clean and chop the tomatoes.
- Add the chopped tomatoes to the dal and place this bowl in the pressure cooker.
- Once the pressure developed in the pressure cooker, cook on low flame for 15 minutes.
- When the cook cools down to room temperature, remove the bowl and set aside.
- Heat oil in a pan.
- When the oil is hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and urad dal.
- Fry till the seeds splutter.
- Add curry leaves, dry red chili and asafetida to the seasoning.
- Now add red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt.
- Add the cooked dal.
- Mix well and if required add some water to get right consistency.
- Bring the dal to a boil and transfer the dal to a serving bowl. (cook dal to the right consistency, neither too watery nor too thick) (dal thickens on cooling and the consistency of the dal brings the taste to this dish)
